LOGON PROBLEMS

Help! I can’t get to the Members Only side of the site!

Check your member number format. Your member number must have seven digits. Insert leading zeroes if necessary. Do not use hyphens or other forms of punctuation (e.g., 12345-6 would be 0123456.)

   ^ Top

Password? What password?

If you are a new user, a randomly generated eight-digit password is on file for you with your airline’s Membership Analyst. If you have forgotten your password, click the New User or Forgot Your Password link on the www.alpa.org page. If you have logged on to the ALPA Intranet at least once and have an e-mail address on file, your password will be e-mailed to you. If you don’t have an e-mail address on file, your password will be mailed to you.

SCREEN DISPLAY ISSUES

I can only see part of the Web page or I can't see both the left-hand and right-hand sides of the ALPA Intranet screen at the same time!

The ALPA Website is designed for 800x600 screen resolution, which is an industry standard. If your display resolution is set for less than this, you may have to scroll left and right to see an entire page. You may be able to change your screen resolution setting to 800x600 or higher.

   ^ Top

To reset the display settings on a PC to 800x600:
  • Click on the Start button | Settings | Control Panel | Display.
  • From the Display tab, click on the Adjustments or Settings tab.
  • Adjust the resolution to 800x600, then click Apply.
If you cannot do this or if your computer won't let you do so, you may need to download a new video driver.

To reset the display settings on a Mac:
  • At the upper left corner of the display, click on the Apple emblem and pull down the menu.
  • Select Control Panel, then pull down the menu and select Monitor.
  • Select Resolution and choose from the alternatives indicated. Many settings are available. One of our Mac users suggests 1024x768 75Hz.

COOKIE ISSUES

I am receiving a cookie error message.

You must have cookies enabled to log on to the ALPA Intranet site. If you are unable to access the Members Only site and are receiving a cookie error, please check your Internet browser’s cookie and security settings to see that your cookies are enabled. Also, if you are using IE 5.0 or 5.5, make sure that your
Fortezza setting has been unchecked. See Browser Issues below.

Cookie-Cruncher and Ad-Blocker Issues

Have you installed a cookie-cruncher or ad-blocker program on your computer? A cookie-cruncher program is a type of Internet utility that restricts users from accessing certain content and certain areas on the Web. Some cookie-cruncher programs do not allow the use of cookies; consequently, users cannot access any site (such as ALPA’s) that uses cookies. Some common cookie-cruncher programs include Cookie Cruncher (versions 2.11, 2.1), Cookie Cutter PC 2.61, Cookie Pal 1.5, Cookie Server 1.01, Cookie Terminator, IEClean 5.0, NSClean32 4.02, Purge Cache, Cookies and Tracks for IE, and Window Washer 2.6. You may not be able to access the Intranet site even if the cookie-cruncher program is installed and disabled. It may be necessary to delete or uninstall the program in order to access this site or any other site that uses cookies.

CACHED PAGES

I am not seeing the Web pages I want to see!

If the page you are looking for does not appear and you’re sure you’ve gone to the correct Internet address, first Refresh (or Reload) your computer screen. If the page does not change, you may need to clear the Web pages that have been stored, or cached, in your computer’s Internet browser. Methods of clearing your computer’s cache differ according to the browser version you are using.

   ^ Top

To clear the cache in AOL 4.0:
  • Go to My AOL | Preferences | WWW | Advanced.
  • Click Purge Cache | Yes.
  • Exit and restart your browser. You may also have to shut down and reboot your computer.
Special note about AOL Caching issues: The AOL Browser is a customized version of a widely available commercial browser, from which AOL has removed significant functionality. Most importantly, AOL attempts to save you time by showing you versions of Web pages that it has saved (cached) on it's servers. This causes problems with Websites like ALPA's which are dynamic, i.e., each page is generated for you specifically by ALPA servers. Therefore, you may end up seeing old or incorrect pages. If this happens and cannot be corrected by clearing your cache you can still connect to the Internet using AOL and once connected start an alternative browser, such as IE 5.0 or Netscape 6.0, and access the site with those browsers.

To clear the cache in Internet Explorer 4.0:
  • Go to View | Internet Options | General tab.
  • Under the Temporary Internet Files heading, click the Delete Files button, then OK.
  • Under the History heading, click Clear Files | Yes | OK.
  • Exit and restart your browser. You may also have to shut down and reboot your computer.

E-MAIL PROBLEMS

I am getting a message that I may have a bad e-mail address when logging into ALPA's Website.

If you know that your e-mail address is valid there may be a solution for you! Some users (AOL users in particular) have the ability to customize which e-mail domains they can receive e-mail from as a way of filtering out any unwanted junk mail (SPAM).

If you know you have a valid e-mail address and you are filtering out certain e-mail domains you will want to be sure not to block the following domains that ALPA uses to send e-mail.
  • .alpamail.org (this one will cover everything)
  • alpa.org
  • mail.alpamail.org
  • ames.alpamail.org
  • mesa.alpamail.org
  • usairways.alpamail.org
  • united.alpamail.org
