Mesaba Pilots Elect New Union Leaders

BLOOMINGTON, Minn.—The pilots of Mesaba Airlines have new leadership at the head of their union’s governing body. Capt. Mark Nagel has been elected chairman of the Master Executive Council (MEC) of the Air Line Pilots Association, International (ALPA) at Mesaba. Also, Capt. Jeril Metzger was re-elected MEC vice chairman, and First Officer Dan Krieger was elected secretary-treasurer. The officers’ two-year terms become effective October 1.

Capt. Nagel enters his new office after serving as Negotiating Committee chairman for the Mesaba pilots. He served in that role through Mesaba’s recent bankruptcy, and served as a Negotiating Committee member since 2001. Prior to that, Nagel served as Scheduling Committee chairman. He is a Captain on the Saab SF340, based in Minneapolis, and has been flying for Mesaba since 1997.

Capt. Metzger continues in the role of vice chairman, one he has served in since January. Prior to that, Metzger served as a member of the Master Executive Council in the positions of both Captain and First Officer representatives for the Minneapolis local council of ALPA, as well as working as Grievance Committee chairman. Metzger is a pilot instructor for Mesaba, based in Minneapolis, and started working for Mesaba as a customer service agent in 1996.

Dan Krieger had been the chief-of-staff for the Master Executive Council for the past two years after serving as a First Officer representative for Minneapolis-based pilots. Krieger, who originally worked as a customer service agent for Mesaba in St. Cloud, will soon be promoted to Captain on the Saab SF340 in Minneapolis. Krieger started working for Mesaba in 1995.

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilot union representing more than 60,000 cockpit crewmembers at 41 airlines in the U.S. and Canada. For more information, visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org.
