NWA Employees Rally against Executive Greed

DETROIT, Mich.Pilots and other employees at Northwest Airlines (NWA) are livid and demoralized over a decision by NWA executives to reward themselves with $400 million once the company emerges from bankruptcy. To demonstrate their anger at NWA executives, NWA pilots and other employees will conduct a NWA Employee Picketing and Rally event Thursday, April 19 in Detroit, Mich.

"Our 40 percent pay cuts are being converted into increased compensation for NWA executives," said Capt. Dave Stevens, chairman of the Northwest Airlines unit of the Air Line Pilots Association. "It is unconscionable to use employees' pay cuts to provide huge bonuses to the same executive team that led our company into bankruptcy."

NWA employees will informational picket from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Thursday, April 19, in front of the ticketing/departure level of the McNamara Terminal at the Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. Immediately following picketing, a NWA employee rally will start at 4:30 p.m. at the Lower Huron Metro Park, located at 17385 Haggerty Road in Belleville, Mich.

The rally will feature speeches by keynote speaker ALPA President Capt. John Prater, NWA Master Executive Chairman (MEC) Chairman Capt. Dave Stevens, AFA-CWA Int’l Vice President Veda Shook and AFA-CWA NWA MEC Vice President Andy Wisbacher. The rally will include food, beverages, and the unveiling of the new NWA executive mascot.

NWA executives' plan to profit from Northwest's bankruptcy comes soon after Northwest pilots agreed to give $358 million annually (included a 23.9 percent pay cut) during the next five years to help the company avoid liquidation. This sacrifice was in addition to the $265 million (including a 15 percent pay cut) annual concession Northwest pilots gave in December 2004. Northwest pilots' total concession of $623 million a year totals over $4 billion through 2011.

"Northwest's senior executives will not only recoup all the concessions they made since 2001, but will be provided far more in bonuses than any other employee group," Capt. Stevens said. "Northwest executives will profit while the employees who suffered the most by having our pay, work rules, benefits, and retirement slashed will receive pennies on the dollar from NWA's employee profit and success sharing programs. Even the inclusion of NWA pilots' claim sale proceeds would at best only return about 20 cents on every dollar conceded in Bankruptcy Court."

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilot union, representing 60,000 pilots at 40 airlines in the United States and Canada. ALPA represents approximately 5,300 active and furloughed NWA pilots. Visit the ALPA website at http://www.alpa.org and the NWA ALPA website at http://www.nwaalpa.org.
