Northwest Airlines Captain Lindsay Fenwick Receives Air Safety Award

WASHINGTON, DC-- Northwest Airlines Capt. Lindsay Fenwick’s superb leadership and expertise in the field of airline accident investigation are two of the many reasons he is being recognized with the 2006 ALPA Air Safety Award, the Association’s highest safety honor. This award will be presented on July 27 at ALPA’s Air Safety Forum and Awards Banquet in Washington, DC. This year’s Forum marks the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Association.

Capt. Fenwick’s dedication to air safety began in 1979 when he joined Hughes Airwest, which eventually merged with Northwest Airlines. From his early years as a Northwest pilot, Capt. Fenwick led efforts to develop the Northwest Airlines Safety Action Partnership (NASAP) program, which aids in the early identification of safety issues.

Capt. Fenwick has also served as the chief accident investigator for the Northwest Airlines chapter of ALPA for 10 years. In this capacity, he has represented ALPA during many NTSB investigations and has been designated as the U.S. representative to the Accident Analysis Committee of the International Federation of Air Line Pilots Associations (IFALPA). His expertise in the international area led to his selection as Principle Vice President – Technical of IFALPA.

According to ALPA’s President, Capt. Duane Woerth, “Lindsay’s tireless efforts in the support of airline accident investigations and air safety programs are a testament to his dedication to the profession, to Northwest Airlines, and to ALPA.”

A native of New Zealand and a graduate of the U.S. Air Force Academy with Masters degrees from Stanford University and MIT, Capt. Fenwick has an exceptional and diverse background. He has made it a practice to recruit new pilots into ALPA safety work at the local, national, and international levels, serving both as a mentor and as a role model for the future generation of airline pilot safety representatives.

Founded in 1931, ALPA represents 62,000 pilots at 40 airlines in the U.S. and Canada and celebrates its 75th anniversary this year. Visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org for more information.
