Northwest Airlines Pilots to Picket in Cities Across the United States

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- Northwest Airlines pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), will conduct informational picketing in four different cities across the United States to demonstrate their frustration with Northwest management’s abuse of the bankruptcy process to demand excessive and unreasonable concessions.

Over the past year, NWA pilots have made historic sacrifices in an attempt to help save their company. In December 2004, Northwest pilots agreed to an annual concessionary package valued at $265 million a year that included a 15 percent pay cut. In November 2005, Northwest pilots agreed to another concessionary package, for an interim period, valued at $215 million which included an additional 23.9% pay cut.

Northwest pilots began voting on Feb. 13 to authorize a strike, and ballots will be counted on Feb. 28. If the majority of NWA pilots authorize a strike, the union leadership will have the authority to call a strike if the company implements new terms and conditions on the pilot group.

"We do not want to strike, we want a fair contract, but we will be prepared to strike if management forces our hand," NWA ALPA Chairman Capt. Mark McClain said. "I am worried that management, as it did in 1998, is once again misjudging the will of our pilot group."

Founded in 1931, ALPA represents 62,000 pilots at 39 airlines in the U.S. and Canada. ALPA represents approximately 5,000 active NWA pilots and 700 furloughed NWA pilots. Visit the ALPA website at http://www.alpa.org and the NWA ALPA website at http://www.nwaalpa.org.
