CanJet Pilots Ratify First Ever Contract

Halifax, NS—CanJet pilots, represented by the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) voted to ratify a new collective bargaining agreement, their first contract as members of a union. More than 70 percent of the pilots voted in favor of the agreement. The new contract represents an immediate 20 percent pay increase for pilots, effective retroactively as of April 1.

“I would like to thank all of the pilots who voted for making their voice heard,” said Capt. Tracey Hyndman, chairman of the CanJet unit of ALPA. “Our pilots are convinced that a union contract will help bring more stability to our work lives while maintaining a positive relationship with our company. “The first contract addresses many of our needs, while still providing management the operational flexibility it needs to compete effectively.” The pilots had been in labor talks with the company for the last year.

CanJet currently utilizes Boeing 737-800 and 737-300 aircraft. Under terms of the new collective bargaining agreement, the company will purchase additional 800 series aircraft late in 2008 and by next winter will operate an all next-generation 737 fleet that increases fuel efficiency and range while reducing noise and carbon emissions.

Stephen Rowe, EVP and COO of the IMP Group, is pleased with the new four-year agreement. “This provides CanJet a stable workforce and enables management to focus fulltime on building CanJet as Canada’s premier charter airline. “We did a great job maintaining good relations with the company, said Hyndman. “It’s a good start.”

CanJet pilots were certified into ALPA in July 2006. Prior to that, the pilots held a volunteer pilot association that had been active for about two years. CanJet, a division of IMP Group, is headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, is Canada's newest full-service charter airline.

Founded in 1931, ALPA represents more than 55,000 pilots at 40 airlines in Canada and the U.S. Visit the ALPA website at http://www.alpa.org.
