ALPA Reacts to Sun Country WARN Notice

BLOOMINGTON, MN—Capt. Buddy Scroggins, chairman of the Sun Country Airlines group of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l, issued the following statement in response to the airline’s WARN notice filing on Thursday, October 2.

“On Thursday night in Bloomington, the Sun Country pilot leaders and our ALPA attorneys, financial analysts, and other professionals sponsored a lengthy pilot meeting to discuss what we have learned about the airline’s financial situation with our members and to get their input. A sizeable majority of the airline’s pilots attended the meeting, either in person or by teleconference. We are satisfied that our members understand the challenges facing the airline and we now have a better understanding of their perspectives.

We reiterate–ALPA has made no commitments to management and no negotiations are scheduled at this time. We are leaving all our options open during this period of evolving circumstances.

The Sun Country pilots understand the financial situation we face, both with the Petters situation and with the broader liquidity situation of the markets. We are willing to make a sacrifice to move our carrier forward. We hope that our sacrifice will be a bridge to our upcoming high-season profitability.

The information management sent out about the WARN Act does not seem to be more than a recognition that future events may occur to worsen the situation for the airline–something that is true for all airlines today.

The Sun Country pilots appreciate and support management’s effort to find solutions to the airline’s funding issues in the near term. This is a great airline and we are all hopeful that we will work here for many years to come.”

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilot union, representing 53,000 pilots at 37 airlines in the United States and Canada, including 120 pilots who fly for Sun Country Airlines. Visit the ALPA website at www.alpa.org.
