First Officer Greg Bergner Receives ALPA’s Presidential Citation
Pompano Beach, Fla., pilot recognized for bold leadership in enhancing aviation security

WASHINGTON—The Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA), will recognize ASTAR (DHL) Air Cargo First Officer Greg Bergner with its 2007 Presidential Citation Award for his outstanding efforts to advance aviation security. The award will be presented today at ALPA’s 54th Annual Air Safety & Security Week Awards Banquet in Washington, D.C.

“First Officer Bergner’s diligence and hard work to ensure cargo airlines garner the same level of security protections for their passengers, crews, and cargo as do passenger airlines helped to make our entire industry more secure,” said Capt. Bob Hesselbein, chairman of ALPA’s National Security Committee.

A pilot for ASTAR Air Cargo, First Officer Bergner has worked tirelessly during his tenure on ALPA’s National Security Committee to advance key aviation security initiatives, including the Federal Flight Deck Officer program and pivotal efforts to improve security for cargo airlines.

“First Officer Bergner has given of his time and expertise to improve aviation security. As a fellow ASTAR pilot, I am especially pleased to see him receive the recognition he so greatly deserves,” said Capt. Pat Walsh, MEC chair of the ASTAR unit of ALPA. “I’d like to personally thank him for making our industry safer.”

First Officer Bergner has also represented ALPA on the Transportation Security Administration’s Aviation Security Advisory Committee and the Air Cargo Risk-Based Targeting/Freight Assessment System working group.

“On behalf of ALPA’s 55,000 members, I congratulate First Officer Bergner for his perseverance and dedication to ensuring a greater level of security for all who depend on air cargo transportation—cargo pilots, their passengers, and, ultimately, air cargo shippers as well,” said Capt. John Prater, ALPA’s president.
