Joint ALPA-IBT News Release

Washington D.C. -- Pilot representatives from the four principal airlines providing cargo transportation services for the DHL network in the United States and Europe met this week at the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA) Headquarters in Washington D.C.

Labor leaders from these carriers originally met two years ago and formed the Global Cargo Pilots Alliance (GCPA) for the purpose of exchanging information, defining common interests, and developing a common strategy to ensure the interests of pilots serving the growing DHL Network are protected. The GCPA is comprised of pilots from ASTAR Air Cargo (formerly DHL Airways), represented by ALPA, Lufthansa Cargo represented by the German Airline Pilots Association, and European Air Transport, represented by the BeCA.

During this most recent round of talks, ASTAR Capt. Jim Bonney, GCPA Chairman, was pleased to welcome the ABX Air Inc. flight crewmembers, represented by Airline Professionals Association Teamsters Local 1224, to the alliance. With the addition of ABX Air, the GCPA now represents approximately 2,000 pilots flying in the service of the DHL Network in the United States, Europe, Middle East and elsewhere.

The 2003 acquisition of Airborne Express in the United States and the recent rollout of its new $150 million advertising campaign have signaled DHL’s intent to secure a position as one of the major competitors in the domestic express package business.
