Mica Introduces ALPA-Backed Bill to Salute FFDOs

July 1, 2005 -- Rep. John Mica (R-FL), the Chairman of the House Aviation Subcommittee, and a bipartisan group of House members have introduced legislation that would commend those pilots who have volunteered to participate in the Federal Flight Deck Officer Program (FFDO).

House Concurrent Resolution 196 “applauds volunteer pilots… for taking a stand against those who would seek to harm the United States through acts of terrorism in the air”. This measure is cosponsored by Reps. Don Young (R-AK), the Chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee; Dan Lundgren (R-CA); Jerry Costello (D-IL), the Ranking Member of the Aviation Subcommittee; and Peter DeFazio (D-OR).

“I thank these distinguished Members of Congress for their salute to our brave FFDOs,” said ALPA President Duane Woerth. “This legislation is more than symbolic. FFDOs carry on the proud heritage of the minutemen who served our nation at its birth. As we head into the 4th of July weekend, it is appropriate that the flying public take a moment to reflect on the dedication of the pilots who have volunteered to defend them if necessary.”

The bill has been referred to the House Homeland Security Committee. ALPA has begun to work to obtain additional cosponsors and ultimately passage of H. Con. Res. 196.
