Hawaiian Pilots’ Union Responds to Fleet Plan Announcement

HONOLULU, HAWAII – Captain Eric Sampson, Chairman of the Hawaiian Airlines unit of the Air Line Pilots Association, Int’l (ALPA) released the following statement today after Hawaiian Airlines announced plans to acquire new long-range aircraft for $4.4 billion.

“While today’s fleet plan announcement is a positive development for our airline, we caution everyone to remember that these new airplanes still exist only on paper. We’re encouraged that our management has taken the long-term view in planning for the acquisition of new aircraft and entering new markets.

“We hope that management remembers the employees who gave back millions in concessions to make this day possible. Management has told us that any improvements to our existing Contract must be cost-neutral. If Hawaiian has enough funds to buy more than a dozen new airplanes, can’t they also afford to pay their pilots a decent wage and fully fund their retirement plan?

“Whether they’re new or old, airplanes are only as good as the pilots who fly them. ALPA is proud to have some of the most outstanding aviators in the world, and world-class pilots flying world-class aircraft deserve the best contract possible. As Hawaiian Airlines moves into the future, we hope our management doesn’t forget the past sacrifices employees have made to make this airline’s success possible.”

Founded in 1931, ALPA is the world’s largest pilots’ union, representing 60,000 pilots at 42 airlines in the U.S. and Canada. Visit the ALPA website at http://www.alpa.org.
